Welcome! You've found the home of all things Back In Time Bookclub. While all announcements will be made on my Instagram (@whatrhisreading), everything will be kept on record here as well.
As this will be the first month of the bookclub, I feel like a little introduction is in order. So, hi! I'm Rhi and I run the @whatrhisreading Instagram page. As you can probably guess my favourite genre of book is Historical Fiction and I absolutely adore taking part in group and buddy reads - so, why not combine the two and run my own bookclub! Quite a few of the mirror details are still being decided, I'm working very much in collaboration with the individuals interested in joining the first instalment of the book club (through Instagram Stories), so please feel free to get involved there - results will be posted on here in due course.
If you've stumbled on to my new blog here, chances are you have came from my Instagram page, so well to the new blog - I am obsessed with it! And if you came from my Instagram then you must have seen November's book selection....
Fawkes by Nadine Brandes:
Guy Fawkes's son must join his father's plot to kill the king if he's to survive the plague overtaking his body in this reimagined fantastical history of the Gunpowder Plot. Remember, remember the fifth of November. In 17th-century London, two forces rule the people: the color powers and the Stone Plague. Brown masks can manipulate wood. Black masks control the night. And red masks . . . well, red is the color of blood. Thomas Fawkes needs a gray mask so he can remove the stone that has invaded his body and will ultimately take his life. But when he fails his color test, his only hope is to track down his father, the infamous Guy Fawkes, and demand his color mask. But his father has other plans: to kill the king. Thomas must join forces with his father if he wants to save his own life. When his errands for the cause bring him time and again to Emma Areben, a former classmate, he is exposed to a whole new brand of magic. Emma doesn't control just one color-she controls them all. And she wants to show Thomas the full power of color magic, but it goes against everything his father is fighting for. If Thomas sides with his father, he could save his own life. But it would destroy Emma and her family. To save one, he must sacrifice the other No matter Thomas's choice, one thing is clear: once the decision is made and the color masks have been put on, there's no turning back.
A very brief history of Guy Fawkes:
I am well aware that not everyone will be aware of Guy Fawkes, so I thought I'd include a little description - although if you want to know more there are plenty of sources out there, I am by no means an expert.
In 1605, a Protestant monarch was on the throne - King James I. During this time, Catholics were forced to practice their religion in secret and were persecuted. Guy Fawkes was part of a group of Catholics who created the Gunpowder Plot - where they stashed explosives underneath the House of Lords with the intent of blowing up Parliament during it's State Opening on the 5th November 1605. Of course, as the Houses of Parliament still stand today, the plot was foiled. However, at the time the King allowed the people to light bonfires every year on the 5th November to celebrate the failure of the plot. Bonfire Night, or Guy Fawkes Night, is still celebrated today (although probably more through the use of fireworks than bonfires nowadays) and is actually one of my favourite nights of the year - hence the book selection.
